President Karzai to Discuss Strategic Issues with President Obama on His Visit to the United States of America

 
January 1, 2013- Aimal Faizi Presidential Spokesperson briefed reporters on Tuesday afternoon at a press conference on the upcoming visit of President Hamid Karzai to the United States of America. Faizi said that President Karzai would discuss various key issues with President Barack Obama on his visit, including the security, economic and political processes, equipping and strengthening of Afghan security forces, the peace process, bilateral security agreement between Afghanistan and the United States of America, manner of US assistance with Afghanistan in the transformation decade and a number of regional issues. Faizi added that on his trip to the United States, the President is going to visit Asadullah Khalid Afghanistan’s Director of National Directorate of Security (NDS), who is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Virginia State of America. Presidential Spokesman welcomed the recent release of the Afghan Taliban prisoners by Pakistan, saying that the prisoners were released based on Afghanistan’s demand following the visits to Pakistan by the delegation of the High Peace Council and Zalmai Rasoul, Foreign Minister of Afghanistan. Aimal Faizi said that the Afghan government is hopeful that the remaining number of the Taliban inmates who are still imprisoned in Pakistan be released, since it would have a positive impact on the peace process. The Presidential Spokesperson underscored that the government of Afghanistan welcomes any efforts, and negotiations inside Afghanistan that proves conducive to bringing peace to the country. Pointing to an office to be opened for the Taliban in Qatar, Faizi said the Afghan Government's position on the Qatar Office depends on developments that would take shape in connection to the peace process of Afghanistan. He noted that the Qatar Office for the Taliban would be established solely for the purpose of peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban, aimed at helping the peace process, and that those who are referred to the Office must be true representatives of the Taliban leaders.
