Fourth South Asian Film Festival in Canberra – 22-27 February 2012

Organised by the South Asian Diplomatic Missions in Canberra in association with the Tuggeranong Arts Centre, the Fourth South Asian Film Festival will be officially launched on Wednesday February 22 by Ms Joy Burch, ACT Minister for Multicultural Affairs and HE Nasir Ahmad Andisha the Ambassador of Afghanistan to Canberra . “An apple from paradise”, an Afghani film directed by the acclaimed producer and writer Siddiq Barmak, was selected to open the festival. Inspired by true events, the film was shot in Kabul in winter 2007 and tells the dramatic story of one father’s search for his son, who is a student at a religious school in Kabul. When he stops attending classes his father learns that he has been sent on a suicide bomb mission. Siddiq Barmak has written numerous screenplays and has made a variety of short films. His first feature film “Osama” won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2004. The South Asian Festival provides a great opportunity to showcase the best of South Asian film industry and offers the Australian public an open window to explore the richness and cultural variety of the region. The Festival was created in 2009 and we invite the people of Canberra to enjoy the films on offer. With six fascinating films from the South Asian region the other participating countries include Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

In the intimacy of Tuggeranong Arts Centre’s cinema, the festival will screen one film a day from Wednesday February 22 to Sunday February 26 and two on Saturday February 25.
