Afghan Delegation Visits Nauru

Recently a delegation consisting of the Third Secretary and the Administrative Officer, was dispatched to the Republic of Nauru where an estimated number of 600 Afghan nationals have been based as part of the agreement reached between the Government of Australia and the Republic of Nauru to accommodate a number of Afghan expatriates who had fled the Taliban 's rule in the past and set sale to seek refuge in Australia.

The visit, actually the second in its kind, was inspired by an urgent need to have a better understanding of the prevalent conditions at the Topside Centre where the Afghan expatriate nationals have been based.

During their one-week stay in the Island the embassy representatives had the opportunity to hold meetings and enjoy direct interactions with the Afghan community making sure that the embassy in Australia would be provided with the right kind of feedback that would help in meeting the consular needs and requirements of these long-suffering Afghans.

It was reported that a number of the refugees, making good use of their various skills and the instruments provided to them by the IOM and the DIMIA, have been involved in skilled and creative activities such as painting, sewing clothes, repairing vehicles and cutting wooden handicrafts which has basically served as a good pastime and kept them engaged at often boring uncertain times. Beautiful pieces of embroidery made by women in the centre were particularly notable for their meticulous and delicate works.

The delegation also conducted interviews with a large number of the expatriates who had expressed their willingness to return to Afghanistan using the package for voluntary return of Afghan refugees offered by the Government of Australia. The main purpose of these interviews was to establish the nationalities of those who had applied for travel documents to facilitate their repatriation.

On the seventh and final day of their stay in the Island the delegation was invited for a dinner hosted by forty Block Leaders (representatives of the whole community) who could make use of time to air the feelings and expectations of the larger community. The embassy representatives also attended a function consisting of dramas, Afghani music and presentations featuring solely the tragic experiences of Afghans who had suffered oppression under the Taliban regime that had basically caused large-scale exodus of Afghans out of their country.
