PRESS RELEASE 2002 DIPLOMATIC FISHING TOURNAMENT

The 2002 Diplomatic Fishing Tournament took place during the weekend of 16-17 November at Buckenderra Holiday Village on Lake Eucumbene. The mainly fine, sunny weather over the weekend made the event most enjoyable for participants. However, as is often the case in such conditions, the fishing was fairly tough.

18 Diplomatic Missions, involving 109 anglers (89 adults and 20 juniors) and 15 teams took part in the tournament and social weekend. In total 41 fish were weighed in (since only the heaviest fish caught counts, not all fish are weighed in), with an average weight of 661 grams. The most successful method this year was trolling which accounted for some 70% of fish weighed-in. Bait fishing followed second with 20%, with fly fishing registering 10% of the catch. Approximately 75% of the entire catch were rainbows.

Jeff Boyd fishing for the New Zealand High Commission, was this year's Individual Grand Open Champion, with an excellent 52 cm brown trout weighing 1678 grams, caught trolling at Middling Bank. Jeff won a Magellan 310 GPS provided by Downtown Duty Free. Additionally, he will enjoy a dinner for two courtesy of the Hyatt Hotel Canberra.

The New Zealand team comprising Jeff Boyd, David Brooks, and Mark Elliott took out the all important team event with a cumulative catch weight of 3195 grams. Thanks to the DFT Organising Committee, the victors will dine at the Crowne Plaza, Brindabella Seafood Buffet. Runners up were the Afghanistan and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade teams placing second and third, respectively.

A 47cm, 1066 gram brown, put Colin Myles fishing for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, first in the Individual Adults Division. Colin’s reward will be to spend a week on Lake Eucumbene, courtesy of Buckenderra Holiday Village. Another outstanding achievement was consecutive wins of the Fly-fishing category by Monir Farhadi,(Afghanistan), which will allow him a free visit to fish Bocco Homestead on the MacLaughlin River.

The Juniors (under 15 years old) were led by Ali Saikal, (Afghanistan Embassy), whose 1346 gram brown landed him a fly rod, reel, and casting lessons courtesy of Pratt's Tackle Box and Anglers' Art.
