Afghanistan Welcomes Canadian Decision to Open Mission in Kabul

Press Release

The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the decision of the Canadian Government to deploy additional security forces and to open a diplomatic mission in Kabul in the upcoming months.

“Canada’s constructive assistance in Afghanistan’s political, security and humanitarian efforts over the past 18 months is appreciated and valued by our people,” said Dr. A. Abdullah, the Afghan Foreign Minister.

Canada is a major donor in several humanitarian and development sectors. It is also an active partner in the war on terrorism, as well as in the spheres of security and peacekeeping in Afghanistan. Canada’s deployment of 1,800 peacekeepers to Afghanistan will certainly add significance to the stabilizing efforts underway in the country.

Following 24 years of conflict and neglect, Afghanistan faces many challenges. However, there are visible improvements in all segments of people’s lives as the country attempts to revive the economy and build democratic institutions. The international community’s continued engagement and constructive role in the country’s rehabilitation are key factors for success.

Canada’s decision to open mission in Kabul will further strengthen the ties between the two nations. The Afghan Embassy in Ottawa was opened for the first time last year and is now fully operational. A new consular office on Toronto also provides services to the relatively large community of Afghans living in Canada.
