A Brief Biography of Dr Abdullah

Dr Abdullah was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Interim Administration of Afghanistan in December 2001. Following the Loya Jirga held in June 2002, he was reappointed as Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Transitional Islamic Government of Afghanistan.

Dr Abdullah had previously served as Acting Foreign Minister (1999-2001) and Deputy Foreign Minister (1997-1999), and Spokesperson for the Islamic State of Afghanistan (1996-2001). He was also a senior aide and adviser to Commander Ahmad Shah Massoud, and a distinguished figure in the Afghan Resistance to the Soviet Occupation of Afghanistan and the Taliban rule of the country. A medical doctor by training, he had earlier been Head of the Health Department, Panjshir Resistance Front, and had practised at the Syed Jamaludin Afghani Eye Hospital for Afghan Refugees, Peshawar (Pakistan), and the Noor Eye Institute, Kabul.

Since taking up the position of Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdullah has worked relentlessly to consolidate Afghanistan’s position as a responsible sovereign state in world politics and attract international support for the reconstruction of the country.
