The Grand Art and Literature Competition

Letter of UNESCO's Director-General

To the Afghan Ambassador to Australia on the launch of

The Grand Art and Literature Competition (GALC) 2003

Dear Ambassador,

Thank you for your letter of 20 February 2003 concerning the Literary and Artistic Competition which the Embassy of Afghanistan in Canberra is organizing with the assistance of the Australian Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training, to be launched on 21 March 2003.

The title that you have chosen this year, "What Future for Afghanistan?" is particularly significant for the participants who, I am pleased to note, will include not only young Afghan people but also Australians and New Zealanders. It is indeed one of UNESCO's principal aims to promote dialogue between different cultures and civilizations, and we are convinced that children and young people are among the best and most effective ambassadors to convey the values of peace and international understanding all over the world.

For this reason, I am pleased to grant UNESCO's sponsorship to the Competition in 2003. In response to your request for assistance, I have given instructions to the UNESCO Office in Afghanistan to facilitate the organization of an exhibition of the prize-winning entries in Kabul.

I wish you every success with this important initiative and look forward to being informed of its outcomes.

Yours sincerely,

Koichiro Matsuura

Director-General

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

17 March 2003
